The one-way door is the key to getting a possum out of a roof the right way. It lets the possum walk out at night as normal, but it cannot get back in. It avoids trapping a possum inside, which can lead to damage, noise and a dead animal in the ceiling. There are two common types. One is a hinged flap made of mesh or clear plastic that swings outwards only. The other is a short mesh tunnel with a flap at the end. The crew chooses the type based on the shape of the gap and the roof, whether it is a tiled roof, an iron roof or an eave on an old cottage.
Placement matters. The door has to go on the gap the possum is using, so the crew looks for rub marks, fur and droppings around each opening. All the other gaps are sealed first, so the door is the only way out. The door is then left for a few nights. Once you hear no more noise, the crew takes it off and seals that final opening too.
