Possums are everywhere in South Brisbane. They live in the big trees of the parks and along the river, and at night they move into roofs, wall cavities and balconies looking for a warm, dry place to sleep. The job starts with finding the way in. The crew checks the roof space for droppings, nests and flattened insulation, then walks the outside of the building to look at eaves, vents, ridge capping and the edges of roof sheets. In older cottages the gaps are often under the verandah roof. In unit blocks they are often around vents and service pipes. A possum that is shut out of one gap will look for another, so every gap counts.
Once the main entry is found, a one-way door goes over it. The possum can leave to feed but cannot get back in. The crew seals the other gaps straight away with mesh or metal, and closes the main entry once the roof is quiet. Before they leave, they show you each spot they have worked on.
